Ground-based Sense and Avoid Support for Unmanned Aircraft Systems

چکیده
The ability to fly an unmanned aircraft regularly and routinely for commercial or civilian applications, in non-segregated, airspace requires a sense and avoid capability. The Mobile aircraft Tracking System (MATS) is a Ground-Based Sense And Avoid (GBSAA) system. The MATS consists of a primary radar, an ADS-B receiver and a transponder interrogator. The Smart Skies project provided an opportunity to test the performance of the MATS using a specially equipped Cessna 172R. This aircraft was also used to calibrate radar cross section (RCS) estimates. The MATS was fielded at a non-towered aerodrome where ScanEagle operations are conducted. The system demonstrated the ability to detect and track the local airspace users and, thus, support routine and regular UAS operations

Designing and Modeling a Control System for Aircraft in the Presence of Wind Disturbance (TECHNICAL NOTE)
This paper proposes a switching adaptive control for trajectory tracking of unmanned aircraft systems. The switching adaptive control method is designed to overcome the wind disturbance and achieve a proper tracking performance for control systems. In the suggested system, the wind disturbance is regarded as a finite set of uncertainties; a controller is designed for each uncertainty, and a per...
متن کاملAnalysis of Radar and ADS-B Influences on Aircraft Detect and Avoid (DAA) Systems
Detect and Avoid (DAA) systems are complex communication and locational technologies comprising multiple independent components. DAA technologies support communications between ground-based and space-based operations with aircraft. Both manned and unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) rely on DAA communication and location technologies for safe flight operations. We examined the occurrence and durati...
متن کاملLIDAR Sensor Based Obstacle Avoidance System for Manned and Unmanned Aircraft
The demand for reliable obstacle avoidance capabilities to ensure safe operation of manned and unmanned aircraft platforms in proximity of the terrain has led to the development of a number of obstacle detection and warning systems. Among the different technologies proposed for the application, the Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) technology employing eye-safe laser sources, advanced electro...
متن کاملEstablishing a Risk-Based Separation Standard for Unmanned Aircraft Self Separation
Unmanned Aircraft Systems require an ability to sense and avoid other air traffic to gain access to civil airspace and meet requirements in civil aviation regulations. One sense and avoid function is self separation, which requires that aircraft remain “well clear.” An approach is proposed in this paper to treat well clear as a separation standard, thus posing it as a relative state between air...

The University of North Dakota is developing airspace within the state where Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UASs) can be flown without an onboard sense and avoid system or Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFRs). With funding from the U.S. Air Force, a mobile ground-based system capable of detecting cooperative aircraft flying in the surrounding airspace, and the software to display information about ...
